Sansuien Spa

These hot springs were first brought forth in February of 1997. Producing 432 tonnes of water per day at a temperature of 48°C. Since the salts within the water give it moisturising properties, the water retains it's ability to warm one, deep down. As Kochi's first quality hot spring and fully equipped spa facility, it attracts a great deal of interest. This ceramic monument commemorates the spa's establishment. It is modelled on the pine-cones that can be found in the gardens.

When the new spa building was constructed on this site, it was given the name “Bathhouse Suisaikaku” to pass on this history on to future generations.

Suisaikaku - “The Palace of wonderful waters”

This calligraphy was written in 1907 (the 40th year of the Meiji Era) on the occasion of a visit by the Taisho Emperor, who was still Crown Prince at the time. He praised the beauty of the Kagami River with the words: “What wonderful waters!” and commanded a member of his staff, Admiral Togo Heihachiro, to write these characters down and that henceforth the house would be known by the name of Suisaikaku, or: “The Palace of wonderful waters”.
